Night itch is the main misery. Nails should be short.
Infectious before the rash is obvious. Pregnant contacts need advice.
Varicella vaccine prevents most severe disease.
Yellow pus, spreading redness or high fever after day four is not ‘normal pox’.
Cool clothes, prescribed lotion and no sharing of towels.
Usually after the last crop has crusted, as we advise in clinic.
Newborns and people on steroids need a quicker call.
We take a full history — onset, feeding, fever, sleep, school and any earlier reports.
Growth, chest, tummy, skin and development are checked. Tests are advised only if they change care.
A clear home plan is given, with a review so we know the child is settling.
Come in if spots look infected, the child is breathing fast, or a baby or immune-suppressed contact is exposed.
